What We Do

Blower Motor & Fan Done Right

You can have a perfectly cold AC system — but if the blower motor isn't pushing air through it, you'll never feel it at the vents. Blower problems come from three common failures: the motor itself wearing out, the blower resistor (or final-stage unit) burning out, or the switch/control module failing.

The tell-tale sign: if your fan only works on the highest speed but nothing below, that's almost always the blower resistor. If the fan doesn't work at all — and you've checked the fuse — it's usually the motor or the switch. We test each one to find the real failure.

Blower motors in modern cars (especially BMW, Mercedes, Audi) use PWM 'final-stage units' instead of simple resistors, which require proper diagnosis and can be pricier. We have the right replacement parts and the experience to fit them correctly.

Signs You Need This Service

  • No air from the vents at all
  • Air only on highest fan speed (1, 2, 3 don't work — only 4 or high)
  • Air only on medium speed — drops out at high
  • Grinding, squealing, or clicking from behind the dashboard
  • Burning electrical smell when fan is on
  • Fan blows irregularly
  • Smoke from vents

Our Process

How We Fix It Right the First Time

1

Test Motor & Resistor Independently

We power the motor directly to rule out motor failure, then test the resistor or final-stage unit to isolate the failed component.

2

Inspect for Debris

Leaves, rodents, and foreign objects sometimes get sucked into the blower cage and cause grinding noises or airflow restriction. A cleaning may be all it needs.

3

Replace & Verify

If replacement is needed, we install the correct OE-quality motor, resistor, or final-stage unit, and verify all fan speeds before you leave.

Questions from Downey Drivers

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my fan only work on the highest setting?

Classic blower resistor (or final-stage unit) failure. The resistor is what controls speeds 1 through 3; speed 4 or 'high' usually bypasses it. When it fails, only the highest speed works. Quick, common fix on most vehicles.

Can a bad blower motor drain my battery?

Usually only if it's left on with the key off (which most modern cars prevent). But a seized motor that's trying to spin can definitely blow the blower fuse repeatedly, and that's a sign to replace it before it causes further damage.

I hear a scraping noise behind the dashboard — is that serious?

Usually it's debris (leaves, an acorn, a small toy) that's fallen into the blower cage. We can access the blower on most vehicles and clean it out. If the motor bearing is actually shot, we'll hear that too and recommend replacement.

How long does blower motor replacement take?

Most blower motor or resistor replacements are done same-day, typically 1–3 hours depending on access. On some BMWs and Mercedes the blower is tucked deep under the dash and takes longer — we'll give you a realistic ETA.
